The riots

There can be no excuse for the criminal activity we have seen on our streets this week and no one should try explaining what happened using political theories, there was nothing political about what these thugs did they should be punished.

Attacking communities

The criminal thugs that have attacked our communities must not be allowed to get away with it and must be punished. They have attacked and destroyed their own communities.

Good initiative

Great to see so many people on the streets of Clapham who gave up their own time to go and clean up the mess created by the thugs the night before. The community spirit was great!

Unemployment figures

Labour market figures released in July showed worrying signs for the future, the TUC said in response.
While the increase in headline employment and fall in headline unemployment were encouraging, the TUC noted that more than 1.5 million people claimed Job Seekers' Allowance in June, a rise of 24,000 on May and the biggest monthly increase in over two years.
Ahead of the figures being released, the TUC published research showing that the last 20 years has seen a significant increase in the proportion of over-50s and people over retirement age in employment.
