Labour market figures released in July showed worrying signs for the future, the TUC said in response.
While the increase in headline employment and fall in headline unemployment were encouraging, the TUC noted that more than 1.5 million people claimed Job Seekers' Allowance in June, a rise of 24,000 on May and the biggest monthly increase in over two years.
Ahead of the figures being released, the TUC published research showing that the last 20 years has seen a significant increase in the proportion of over-50s and people over retirement age in employment.
